He arrived in Palestine in 1921, ultimately staying for two years, documenting Palestine as the British Mandate was formally being established. Contrarily to many other European photographers portraying Orientalist inspirations, Franck Scholten photographed daily life through the various confessional and ethnic communities, social classes, cities and landscapes of Palestine. This book revisits the recently released Scholten photographic collection on Palestine by presenting different Christian communities, their diversity, and the changes they faced, along with Muslim and Jewish populations, in early 1920s Palestine. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).

Memoria, the liturgic commemoration of the dead, figures in this study as a unifying perspective on the economic, social, and cultural aspects of village life in the late medieval northern Low Countries.
Against the background of Erik Thoen’s model of social agrosystems, a set of 56 rural parishes of which local memoria registers have been preserved is analysed.
This study shows, among other aspects, how rural salvation markets developed; how kinship, social stratifications, and translocal networks were reflected in these registers; and how liturgy and loyalties shaped medieval villages as imagined communities in which care for the salvation of deceased villagers played a major role.

While the presence of mental disorders impacts criminal responsibility, the legal responses and practices differ significantly across jurisdictions. The complex sanctioning system in Türkiye faced substantial challenges due to the absence of secure forensic psychiatric facilities until 2018. Despite legal mandates, mentally disordered offenders were often either released or unlawfully detained in prisons, creating a prolonged gap between law and practice. The research highlights how the situation evolved and assesses the lingering issues, which were exacerbated by delays during the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to contextualize the criminal justice system of Türkiye, comparisons are drawn with the criminal justice systems of the Netherlands and England and Wales, two jurisdictions which have distinct and unique frameworks for mentally disordered offenders. The eminent TBS (terbeschikkingstelling) system of the Netherlands and the bifurcated sentencing approach in England and Wales provide valuable points of reference. This publication is of significance in the field of legal academic literature given the paucity of research on the Turkish criminal justice system, carried out in languages other than Turkish. It evaluates the degree to which these systems adhere to or deviate from ECHR standards, thereby providing insights that facilitate improved compliance with human rights requirements. By bridging comparative legal traditions and identifying best practices, this research holds significant societal and academic relevance. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). Having occupied an important place in the Low Countries’ religious pasts, psalmody continues to live on, inside religious contexts and in other domains, such as the arts and cultural heritage. Psalmody is increasingly being reinvented by artists and cultural creators. This dissertation is a study of these ritual-musical appropriations of Psalms. Empirical investigation of four different case studies through the use of ethnographic methods forms the basis of this study. These cases are: the festival 150 Psalms, Genemuider Bovenstem collective psalmody, the poetry project Poesia Divina, and Psalm 151, a project with new poetry and new music. It appears that, as heritage, psalmody allows for plural appropriations in which religious and secular meanings become blurred as appropriating (groups of) individuals explicitly and freely play with symbols and rituals from different religious and secular (concert) traditions. At the same time, this study shows that, in their appropriation, individuals often feel invited or challenged by traditions of (collective) psalmody. In their appropriation, they feel challenged to address God, to enhance or evoke collective performance, and to make room for existential contemplation. This empirical research offers further academic theorization about the meaning of heritage rooted in religion, in this case performed Psalms, especially in a post-Christian cultural context in which religious past psalmody once occupied a central place. For practitioners of psalmody, this research shows both the versatility of psalmody and the different ways that psalmody fits into late-modern (secularized, pluralized, globalized) societies. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC 4.0). This edited volume chronicles how we both learn to skate and learn from skateboarding – zooming in on topics including gestalt therapy, care work, motherhood, and grassroots advocacy.Contributors: Åsa Bäckström, Rhianon Bader, John Dahlquist, Jessica Forsyth, Sophie Friedel, Arianna Gil, Sander Hölsgens, Lian Loke, Sanné Mestrom, Douglas Miles, Nadia Odlum, Adelina Ong, Noah Romero, Esther Sayers, Indigo Willing =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). Baruch Spinoza’s philosophy offers a profound perspective on this paradox and points to a possible solution. Spinoza suggests that real empowerment comes from enhancing the kind of knowledge we possess, revealing a limitless source of vitality in understanding ourselves as part of a greater whole. But to fully grasp and apply Spinoza's ideas, we must see him not just as a philosopher, but as a practitioner of a discipline akin to the “yoga” of India. Unlike most Indian yogic traditions, however, Spinoza’s approach emphasizes not renouncing desire but intensifying it. This fresh view makes Spinoza’s philosophy a practical guide for transforming how we live in the world, while also offering new insights into the relevance and application of Indian yogic traditions. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). It is also one of the most prioritized policy goals at a national and European level. Yet, ‘interdisciplinarity’ remains under-defined, and the challenges and obstacles unique to doing interdisciplinarity remain fuzzy. How, then, are we supposed to adopt an interdisciplinary approach if we don’t even know what the word means? In this peer-reviewed edited volume of student scholarship, we delve into what it means to do interdisciplinarity in response to this challenge. Drawing upon both the disciplinary expertises of professional researchers and educators, and the experiences and analyses of students actually enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes, this volume is unique in offering both high-level conceptual analyses of the virtues and problems inherent to interdisciplinary research, and on-the-ground case notes of what interdisciplinary teaching and research looks like in practice. With contributions from:Daniel MacRae, Hubert Matuszewski, Patrik Wintergerst, Benjamin Bewersdorf, Catherine Lange, Elena Laviolette Di Carpegna, Mosele Jansen, Stela Gkika, Marline Lisette Wilders, Twan Tromp, Kerstin Baureis, Alison Cronin, Julius Bischof, Nikolai Levin, Omer Levy, Mira Singh, Ferdinand Lewis. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). In particular, it considers to what extent the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement (TCA) is adequate for the energy sector post-Brexit by exploring whether the TCA delivers legal certainty, has been effectively implemented, and meets the Brexit objectives. The analysis of these questions leads to several recommendations, for instance in relation to the implementation of the TCA and its extension to new energy technologies. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). However, his stay in Jerusalem and his broader views on politics, culture and religion, including on Zionism and Arab Palestinian nationalism, remain largely unknown. In 1919, De Haan went to Palestine, where exactly one hundred years ago, in June 1924, he was murdered because of his sharp criticism on political Zionism. This book contextualizes the Palestine years within the biography of a man who durably impacted the links between the Netherlands and Palestine and who is said to be, for some, a Dutch Lawrence of Arabia. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-SA 4.0). The bustling UB City Centre that welcomes thousands of students every day became a festival ground and was once again the ‘place to be’ at the University of Groningen (UG).No wonder it was unreal to walk through the empty and quiet building three weeks later. Our slogan ‘University of Groningen Library – where the Shhh happens’ suddenly took on a completely different meaning. The UB did not close during the ‘intelligent lockdown’, and it was anything but quiet behind the scenes: the UB still offered its services to UG students and staff members during the COVID-19 crisis. Even when the Cabinet announced on 3 November that some additional measures were being taken on top of the partial lockdown, the UB remained open. While all public libraries, museums and theatres had to close their doors. This chronicle describes the adjustments to our services in the period from March to October 2020: our experiences and considerations and the preparations to reopen the reading rooms with measures that changed almost every week. The authors Bert Platzer and Marjan Brouwers interviewed dozens of employees – on behalf of all University Library staff members – about their experiences over the past few months. The result: The New Normal. Chronicle of the University of Groningen Library in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. As director, I find it remarkable how UB staff members responded to this new norm. Thanks to their dedication, flexibility and inventiveness, it was possible to maintain the services of the University Library – to the delight of our users.I would like to express my gratitude, respect and admiration to all University Library staff members. I dedicate this book to them, about a period which is now part of the 405-year history of the University of Groningen Library.Marjolein NieboerDirector of the University of Groningen Library =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). However, it was clear from the beginning that these notes would not be able to cover this rapidly changing and growing field in its entirety. The focus lies on classical machine learning techniques, with a bias towards classification and regression. Other learning paradigms and many recent developments in, for instance, Deep Learning are not addressed or only briefly touched upon.Biehl argues that having a solid knowledge of the foundations of the field is essential, especially for anyone who wants to explore the world of machine learning with an ambition that goes beyond the application of some software package to some data set. Therefore, The Shallow and the Deep places emphasis on fundamental concepts and theoretical background. This also involves delving into the history and pre-history of neural networks, where the foundations for most of the recent developments were laid. These notes aim to demystify machine learning and neural networks  without losing the appreciation for their impressive power and versatility. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0). How was the notion and sense of self shaped at different times and in different cultures? What sort of problems or paradoxes did these constructions face? These lectures address these and related questions by sketching a roadmap of possible theoretical avenues for conceiving of the self, bringing to the foreground its soteriological implications, while also testing this theoretical outlook against insights offered by various disciplines. Exploring the crosscultural spectrum of possible ways of conceiving of the self invites the more existential question of whether any of these possibilities might offer resources for dealing with the tragedies of today’s world, or maybe even saving it from some of them. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
Zoos as an urban wilderness’.

On 31 December 2009, Prof. Pim Kooij retired as Professor of Economic and Social History at the University of Groningen and as Professor of Rural History at Wageningen University. He also retired as managing director of the Netherlands Agricultural Historical Institute and as chief editor of Historia Agriculturae. In honour of this occasion, a special volume of Historia Agriculturae has been issued, containing previously published articles and a few new ones – including his valedictory lecture – covering the fields in which he has been active during his academic career.

=538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). It is rooted in both feeling and understanding. In the Pāli discourses of the Buddha, friendliness is repeatedly stressed and encouraged for its numerous benefits. It supports and develops a form of emotional intelligence and provides an ideal pathway to explore deeper aspects of one’s experience and their philosophical implications. Friendliness is best understood not in isolation, but rather in the broader context of the Buddha’s teachings. In that context, it plays an essential role as a catalyst for the unfolding of the whole Buddhist path. Friendliness, then, can be a particularly interesting thread to follow in order to unpack the meaning and practical implications of the core teachings conveyed in the discourses. This introduction combines meditation practice, philosophy, and the reading of ancient texts in order to show how friendliness can function both as an entry point to explore the landscape of the discourses, and how that same landscape unfolds from the perspective disclosed by friendliness. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). The Twentieth Horst Gerson Lecture held in memory of Horst Gerson (1907-1978) in the aula of the University of Groningen on the 4th of October 2019

The point, from which we are defining the human ability to design artefacts and use symbolic signs is currently shifting to a more distant past. The insights responsible for this pushing back, are based, for example, on findings of very early human-shaped sculpture in Swabia, on the realization that human sign-making started literally hundred thousand years earlier than previously thought, as well as the realization that even hand-axes could carry symbolic meaning. Taken together, these phenomena call for a redefinition of the anthropos, in which the ability to design plays an eminent role. The lecture aims to show how the capacity to discriminate and creatively employ visual and material difference in the environment was a pre-condition for the development of human kind. Against this background, the question rises, if the fruitful collaboration between the fields of aesthetics, art history, and anthropology, that drove nineteenth century research into the origins of human creativity, can be revived.

=538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). We document empirical findings of differentiated instruction practices in secondary education across diverse countries/education systems, covering student, teacher, school, and education system/country levels. Classroom observations and student surveys, both collected in authentic classrooms, are the core measures of inquiry used. Findings on similarities and differences in differentiated instruction practices, changes over time, links with student engagement, and the role of some personal and contextual factors, contribute to advance the knowledge base particularly in the field of teaching effectiveness, learning environments research, and differentiation in education. Findings are relevant for research, practice, and policy. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). In contrast, this book focuses on singular causation.Since it is inferred from testimonial evidence, singular causation is of interest in ethnographic case studies, where comparisons between cases and generalizations are not always possible. The book develops the notion of Bayesian and Comparative Narratives, using them to marshal evidence for singular causal connections from ethnographically elicited, indicative, counterfactual, and counterpotential statements. While preserving the universal concept of causality, the book explores its specific rather than general dimension. By addressing their complementary roles in causal identification and estimation, "quantitative" and "qualitative" approaches find common ground. With contribution of Henry Wynn =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). The Sixteenth Gerson Lecture held in memory of Horst Gerson (1907-1978) in the Aula of the University of Groningen on the 10th of November 2011.

In conclusion, the role that visual memory played in the creative process was an issue that preoccupied not only artists but also critics, philosophers, and psychologists in the second half of the nineteenth century. The lively discourse that the topic generated had much to do with its complexity, even its apparent ambiguity. While some saw a well-trained memory as an aid to examine and record reality, others saw it as a hindrance to close and unbiased observation. While memory was seen by some as a source of imagination, others saw it as a cause of schematization. While some advocated its synthesizing power, others saw this same power as a source of impoverishment of art. Depending on what aspect of memory was foregrounded, its use was strongly encouraged or discouraged. It is clear that the debate on the benefits of the application of visual memory to artmaking was intricately linked to another important debate that took place at the end of the nineteenth century, one about the relative value of naturalism and abstraction. Once that debate was, in some sense, "won" in the early twentieth century by those who favored abstraction, the nineteenth-century discourse on memory lost much of its relevance. At the same time, the way in which memory was understood was radically changed by Sigmund Freud, who added a new twist by the introduction of the unconscious- an area of the mind where unwanted memories were stashed away, difficult to access but not without the possibility or retrieval. It is this aspect of memory that came to fascinate the Surrealists, who placed it at the center of their creative process. But that is an entire new chapter in the relation between art, memory, and hand, which is outside the purview of this paper.

Onze slogan ’The UB - Where the Shhh happens’ kreeg ineens een heel andere betekenis. After becoming professor, he first looked for general psychological laws, and later became interested in how people differ. Heymans investigated this question by studying biographies and collecting survey data. With this rigorous approach that far exceeded the standards of his time, he arrived at three basic dimensions in which people can vary in their temperament. This became the renowned 'Heymans' Cube'.Through decades of lectures for students and professors of all faculties, the theory became widely popular. This book provides a translation and adaptation of the original work, Heymans' lnleiding tot de speciale psychologie (1929). The fact that both our institutions and our mental life are regulated by communication is more and more evident. It is also clear that human history should submit itself to a democratic consensus, and that contemporary societies have to proclaim themselves democratic, pretending many times they are following a consensus that must be the kernel of collective and of individual development. This consensus, however, is itself also being submitted to an all-encompassing social experiment. Such an experiment is permanently looking for new laws and new accomplishments, because in complying with the scientific model, it presupposes that laws previously valid, and previous social accomplishments no longer apply because social life is in need of being reinvented and people should live in harmony the new laws. The individuals are therefore entangled in this continuous reconfiguration of their institutions and of themselves. They are nolens volens obliged to judge this perpetual renewal of their social tissue in order to secure their own personal life. This book is an answer to the now globally widespread need of judgment by everyone of the results of this continuous reconfiguration, and although it does not claim any final conclusion, it sums up many important views about our time, coming from human and social that should be an important contribution to the construction a humanity worth living.“From Jacques Poulain’s Prologue” =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0).

Subsequently, it might have answers for how we can address global challenges, such as climate change and poverty, but not why we should. This supposedly neutral stance leaves it to politics and religions (in the sense of non-scientific fields of social engagement) to fill in the values. The problem is that through this concession, science implicitly acknowledges that it is not of universal relevance. Objective knowledge, as Karl Popper calls for, might be less easily attainable in the world of ideas and within the confines of scientific idealism. However, if ideas, values and meaning have equal claim to be drivers of change in the sense of causation, aspiring to identify objective knowledge about the world of ideas and of meaning is necessary. If the sciences and disciplines aim to give objectively valid reasons for our actions (and for how to address global challenges), we need to elevate the study of meaning beyond the cultural, disciplinary and ideational delineations. We need to come to a meta understanding of values and meaning equal to objective knowledge about the material world. But differently than in the material world this meta understanding needs to incorporate individual and subjective experiences as cornerstones of objectivity on a meta-level.We need a science of meaning; one that can scientifically answer Kant’s third question of “what may we hope for”. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). In this book, Achenwall presents the philosophical foundation for his comprehensive theory of natural law. The book is of interest not only because it provides the basis for a careful, systematic, and well-respected eighteenth-century theory of natural law in the Leibniz-Wolffian tradition, but also because it sheds important light on the work of Immanuel Kant. Achenwall’s work influenced Kant’s legal and political philosophy as well as his ethics, and it is indispensable for understanding Kant’s Feyerabend Lectures on Natural Law and his Metaphysics of Morals. The present volume complements the translation of Achenwall’s handbook, Natural Law. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-ND 4.0). After Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi used Mosul’s Al Nuri Mosque to declare the caliphate in 2014, the city was captured and occupied by the Islamic State. After a fierce battle, the city was liberated in 2017, however, large parts of the city, including most of the old city, were completely destroyed. Currently, the city is undergoing reconstruction. This book focuses on that reconstruction by zooming in on the cultural heritage sites, the residential areas and the camps outside of the city where former residents now live, awaiting their return to the city. This book shines a light on how certain projects are prioritized, how other projects are neglected or postponed, and the consequences for the city’s residents. =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).
