Friendliness (mettā in Pāli) is an emotional and intentional attitude of goodwill and non-aversion towards all sentient beings, including oneself. It is rooted in both feeling and understanding. In the Pāli discourses of the Buddha, friendliness is repeatedly stressed and encouraged for its numerous benefits. It supports and develops a form of emotional intelligence and provides an ideal pathway to explore deeper aspects of one’s experience and their philosophical implications. Friendliness is best understood not in isolation, but rather in the broader context of the Buddha’s teachings. In that context, it plays an essential role as a catalyst for the unfolding of the whole Buddhist path. Friendliness, then, can be a particularly interesting thread to follow in order to unpack the meaning and practical implications of the core teachings conveyed in the discourses. This introduction combines meditation practice, philosophy, and the reading of ancient texts in order to show how friendliness can function both as an entry point to explore the landscape of the discourses, and how that same landscape unfolds from the perspective disclosed by friendliness.

The Twentieth Horst Gerson Lecture held in memory of Horst Gerson (1907-1978) in the aula of the University of Groningen on the 4th of October 2019

The point, from which we are defining the human ability to design artefacts and use symbolic signs is currently shifting to a more distant past. The insights responsible for this pushing back, are based, for example, on findings of very early human-shaped sculpture in Swabia, on the realization that human sign-making started literally hundred thousand years earlier than previously thought, as well as the realization that even hand-axes could carry symbolic meaning. Taken together, these phenomena call for a redefinition of the anthropos, in which the ability to design plays an eminent role. The lecture aims to show how the capacity to discriminate and creatively employ visual and material difference in the environment was a pre-condition for the development of human kind. Against this background, the question rises, if the fruitful collaboration between the fields of aesthetics, art history, and anthropology, that drove nineteenth century research into the origins of human creativity, can be revived.

An interdisciplinary volume combining academic articles with thematic case studies and commentary by policy makers and practitioners, resulting in a combination of academic research and policy recommendations for timely societal impact.

Medium-sized cities across Europe are increasingly and actively attracting skilled migrants. How can these cities best manage the challenges of internationalisation? That is to say: How can they attract, facilitate and integrate skilled migrants, enabling them to contribute to the regional culture and economy, while still serving their local populations and maintaining social cohesion?

In this volume, we combine academic findings with policy reflections to provide a uniquely interdisciplinary guide for academics, policy makers and professionals in local governments, universities, HRM departments, for successfully co-ordinated international talent management.

This book reports findings based on a largescale project on differentiated instruction across various education systems documenting evidence of its measurement, differences, changes, and links with student engagement.
We document empirical findings of differentiated instruction practices in secondary education across diverse countries/education systems, covering student, teacher, school, and education system/country levels. Classroom observations and student surveys, both collected in authentic classrooms, are the core measures of inquiry used. Findings on similarities and differences in differentiated instruction practices, changes over time, links with student engagement, and the role of some personal and contextual factors, contribute to advance the knowledge base particularly in the field of teaching effectiveness, learning environments research, and differentiation in education. Findings are relevant for research, practice, and policy.

This book explores the problem of causal inference when a sufficient number of comparative cases cannot be found, which would permit the application of frequency based models formulated in terms of explanatory causal generalizations.

Recent developments in causal inference focus mainly on type-causal mechanisms, where one type of event (such as greenhouse gas emissions) causes another type of event (such as climate change). In contrast, this book focuses on singular causation.

Since it is inferred from testimonial evidence, singular causation is of interest in ethnographic case studies, where comparisons between cases and generalizations are not always possible. The book develops the notion of Bayesian and Comparative Narratives, using them to marshal evidence for singular causal connections from ethnographically elicited, indicative, counterfactual, and counterpotential statements.
While preserving the universal concept of causality, the book explores its specific rather than general dimension. By addressing their complementary roles in causal identification and estimation, "quantitative" and "qualitative" approaches find common ground.

The Sixteenth Gerson Lecture held in memory of Horst Gerson (1907-1978) in the Aula of the University of Groningen on the 10th of November 2011.

In conclusion, the role that visual memory played in the creative process was an issue that preoccupied not only artists but also critics, philosophers, and psychologists in the second half of the nineteenth century. The lively discourse that the topic generated had much to do with its complexity, even its apparent ambiguity. While some saw a well-trained memory as an aid to examine and record reality, others saw it as a hindrance to close and unbiased observation. While memory was seen by some as a source of imagination, others saw it as a cause of schematization. While some advocated its synthesizing power, others saw this same power as a source of impoverishment of art. Depending on what aspect of memory was foregrounded, its use was strongly encouraged or discouraged. It is clear that the debate on the benefits of the application of visual memory to artmaking was intricately linked to another important debate that took place at the end of the nineteenth century, one about the relative value of naturalism and abstraction. Once that debate was, in some sense, "won" in the early twentieth century by those who favored abstraction, the nineteenth-century discourse on memory lost much of its relevance. At the same time, the way in which memory was understood was radically changed by Sigmund Freud, who added a new twist by the introduction of the unconscious- an area of the mind where unwanted memories were stashed away, difficult to access but not without the possibility or retrieval. It is this aspect of memory that came to fascinate the Surrealists, who placed it at the center of their creative process. But that is an entire new chapter in the relation between art, memory, and hand, which is outside the purview of this paper.

Onze slogan ’The UB - Where the Shhh happens’ kreeg ineens een heel andere betekenis.

Heinrich Kuhl (1797-1821) and Johan Conrad van Hasselt (1797-1823) studied natural history and medicine respectively at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands from 1816 till 1820. During their studies they travelled widely through Europe, and met with famous scientists of the day in Germany, England and France. Due to their extraordinary qualities they were, in 1820, appointed by the Dutch government as the first delegates of the newly founded Commission for the Study of the Natural Sciences of the Netherlands East Indies to study the natural history of that region. Unfortunately their promising lives were cut short by their premature death.

This biography describes their lives, their considerable accomplishments in Europe and the Dutch East Indies, and their place in the scientific community at the time, especially in zoological systematics. The results of their systematic studies are shown to be still relevant to present-day science.

Over the last few years, Groningen universities and the Gemeente Groningen have undertaken an initiative to become known not merely as a student city, but as an “international” city.
To achieve this, they have planned to increase the international student population within the city.

While trying to attain this vision, however, problems seem to have surfaced. In this white paper, we argue that many of the issues underlying this policy are either not clearly defined or are defined too narrowly. This naturally poses serious problems for the future of Groningen as an international student city.

This is the first English translation of the Prolegomena iuris naturalis by Gottfried Achenwall (1719–1772). In this book, Achenwall presents the philosophical foundation for his comprehensive theory of natural law. The book is of interest not only because it provides the basis for a careful, systematic, and well-respected eighteenth-century theory of natural law in the Leibniz-Wolffian tradition, but also because it sheds important light on the work of Immanuel Kant. Achenwall’s work influenced Kant’s legal and political philosophy as well as his ethics, and it is indispensable for understanding Kant’s Feyerabend Lectures on Natural Law and his Metaphysics of Morals. The present volume complements the translation of Achenwall’s handbook, Natural Law.

Memoria, the liturgic commemoration of the dead, figures in this study as a unifying perspective on the economic, social, and cultural aspects of village life in the late medieval northern Low Countries.
Against the background of Erik Thoen’s model of social agrosystems, a set of 56 rural parishes of which local memoria registers have been preserved is analysed.
This study shows, among other aspects, how rural salvation markets developed; how kinship, social stratifications, and translocal networks were reflected in these registers; and how liturgy and loyalties shaped medieval villages as imagined communities in which care for the salvation of deceased villagers played a major role.

As skaters increasingly engage with and respond to socio-political surges across the globe, skateboarding begins to refract into a multiplicity of situated practices. This includes a new wave of collectives and communities who re-imagine what cities could sound, feel, and be like.

Combining filmmaking with ethnographic writing, Sander Hölsgens traces the lived experience of a small group of skaters in South Korea. As a skater among skaters, he unravels the site-specific nuances and relational meanings of skateboarding in Seoul – working towards an intimate portrait of a growing community.

Humanity today holds unprecedented power over nature, but this achievement has led to crises—from extreme inequality to climate disaster—that seem beyond our control. Baruch Spinoza’s philosophy offers a profound perspective on this paradox and points to a possible solution. Spinoza suggests that real empowerment comes from enhancing the kind of knowledge we possess, revealing a limitless source of vitality in understanding ourselves as part of a greater whole. But to fully grasp and apply Spinoza's ideas, we must see him not just as a philosopher, but as a practitioner of a discipline akin to the “yoga” of India. Unlike most Indian yogic traditions, however, Spinoza’s approach emphasizes not renouncing desire but intensifying it. This fresh view makes Spinoza’s philosophy a practical guide for transforming how we live in the world, while also offering new insights into the relevance and application of Indian yogic traditions.

‘Interdisciplinarity’ is a bit of a buzzword in the Dutch university sector. It is also one of the most prioritized policy goals at a national and European level. Yet, ‘interdisciplinarity’ remains under-defined, and the challenges and obstacles unique to doing interdisciplinarity remain fuzzy. How, then, are we supposed to adopt an interdisciplinary approach if we don’t even know what the word means?

In this peer-reviewed edited volume of student scholarship, we delve into what it means to do interdisciplinarity in response to this challenge. Drawing upon both the disciplinary expertises of professional researchers and educators, and the experiences and analyses of students actually enrolled in interdisciplinary programmes, this volume is unique in offering both high-level conceptual analyses of the virtues and problems inherent to interdisciplinary research, and on-the-ground case notes of what interdisciplinary teaching and research looks like in practice.

What makes for a real Groninger meal?

A traditional bowl of stamppot, lovingly prepared at home? A giant bowl of mosterdsoep met spek, served with crusty white bread? A cheeky eierbal at two in the morning, still steaming from the deep fryer?

All good answers. But, as this book goes to show, Groninger cuisine is much more than just the classics.

Produced with love by students at the University College Groningen, the New Groninger Cookbook explores what happens when a nuchter Dutch city collides with students and migrants from around the world.

By turns surprising, entertaining, and delicious, the recipes in this book reveal a whole new side of Groninger cuisine: a side that will keep you coming back for more.

At the end of February 2020, the University of Groningen Library (UB) celebrated its 405th anniversary with an open day, lectures, guided tours, theatre performances, musical performances and an interactive anniversary lunch for UB staff members. The bustling UB City Centre that welcomes thousands of students every day became a festival ground and was once again the ‘place to be’ at the University of Groningen (UG).

No wonder it was unreal to walk through the empty and quiet building three weeks later. Our slogan ‘University of Groningen Library – where the Shhh happens’ suddenly took on a completely different meaning. The UB did not close during the ‘intelligent lockdown’, and it was anything but quiet behind the scenes: the UB still offered its services to UG students and staff members during the COVID-19 crisis. Even when the Cabinet announced on 3 November that some additional measures were being taken on top of the partial lockdown, the UB remained open. While all public libraries, museums and theatres had to close their doors.

This chronicle describes the adjustments to our services in the period from March to October 2020: our experiences and considerations and the preparations to reopen the reading rooms with measures that changed almost every week.

The authors Bert Platzer and Marjan Brouwers interviewed dozens of employees – on behalf of all University Library staff members – about their experiences over the past few months. The result: The New Normal. Chronicle of the University of Groningen Library in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As director, I find it remarkable how UB staff members responded to this new norm. Thanks to their dedication, flexibility and inventiveness, it was possible to maintain the services of the University Library – to the delight of our users.

I would like to express my gratitude, respect and admiration to all University Library staff members. I dedicate this book to them, about a period which is now part of the 405-year history of the University of Groningen Library.

However, it was clear from the beginning that these notes would not be able to cover this rapidly changing and growing field in its entirety. The focus lies on classical machine learning techniques, with a bias towards classification and regression. Other learning paradigms and many recent developments in, for instance, Deep Learning are not addressed or only briefly touched upon.
Biehl argues that having a solid knowledge of the foundations of the field is essential, especially for anyone who wants to explore the world of machine learning with an ambition that goes beyond the application of some software package to some data set. Therefore, The Shallow and the Deep places emphasis on fundamental concepts and theoretical background. This also involves delving into the history and pre-history of neural networks, where the foundations for most of the recent developments were laid. These notes aim to demystify machine learning and neural networks  without losing the appreciation for their impressive power and versatility.

How was the notion and sense of self shaped at different times and in different cultures? What sort of problems or paradoxes did these constructions face? These lectures address these and related questions by sketching a roadmap of possible theoretical avenues for conceiving of the self, bringing to the foreground its soteriological implications, while also testing this theoretical outlook against insights offered by various disciplines. Exploring the crosscultural spectrum of possible ways of conceiving of the self invites the more existential question of whether any of these possibilities might offer resources for dealing with the tragedies of today’s world, or maybe even saving it from some of them.Cover design / Typesetting: LINE UP boek en media bv | Mirjam Kroondijk, Riëtte van ZwolPublisher: University of Groningen PressBroerstraat 4 9712 CP GroningenProduction support: LINE UP boek en media bvThe softcover version of this book (ISBN: 9789403430089) can be ordered via Print on demand directly on the site of our partner Uitgeverij kleine Uil, and through all regular (internet) bookshops.Open textbook edition available via: University of Groningen Open Textbooks =538 \\$aMode of access: World Wide Web. =540 \\$aThe text of this book is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0).

Most of what gets published about war zones is written by a remarkably small group of people.

Soldiers, journalists, politicians, public intellectuals: these are the people we turn to in times of crisis.

And yet, in turning to these people we miss something very important. We miss the voices of the displaced, the victimised, and the oppressed. The voices of the voiceless.

This book is here to help change that.

Containing seven beautifully illustrated stories of conflict—from the Balkans to Africa, and beyond—these are the untold stories of war.
