Het is de vraag of zulke binaire opposities recht doen aan de inhoud en invloed van Verlichting en Romantiek. Zijn de twee in werkelijkheid niet veel meer met elkaar verweven? En wat zeggen ze ons nog precies? Die cultuurhistorische vragen staan centraal in dit liber amicorum voor filosoof en dichter Maarten Doorman, die met De romantische orde en andere boeken de relatie tussen Verlichting en Romantiek opnieuw in het middelpunt van de belangstelling heeft geplaatst. Aan de hand van Doormans werk laten filosofen en wetenschappers hun licht schijnen over de scherpe, soms ironische ambivalenties inherent aan Verlichting en Romantiek.
