It certainly is on the desks of trade union officials, of HRM staff of the enterprises and of lawyers and judges, but that is French, German, Polish, etc. labour law. European Labour Law is hardly known even among labour law experts. That is of no great matter as much of the labour law of Europe is, like a sponge absorbs the water, implemented in domestic law. Sometimes, however, one needs to trace the European origins of domestic laws, for example when there are doubts whether domestic law is fully in accordance with European law. This book has the ambition to put the reader wise about the European origins on Labour Law. In the United States the most important labour laws have an all USAcharacter. New York, California, Florida etc. have their own labour laws. However, the basic labour and social security law is overwhelmingly uniform from the Atlantic to the Pacific coast. Things are different in Europe. Presumably at least 80% of labour law in Europe is determined by the various States. As a consequence there are still numerous differences between the labour laws of the various countries in Europe. And it is bound to stay so for several more decades, as the EU does not have the ambition to bring about full scale harmonization of labour law in its Member States. However, I believe that – even if harmonization of labour law is not the deliberate objective of the EU – the legal systems of the European countries are in fact getting closer to each other. The countries are looking beyond their national fences and they are often voluntarily adapting their systems to those of their neighboring countries. The aim, triggered by the fifteenth anniversary celebration of the theological faculty, was to set up an open scholarly ex-change, challenging all those present to engage both in open dialogue and critical self-reflection on our disciplines. And, while no plans had been made to publish any results, the striking experience that this moment of intellectual sharing had brought more than just the sum of separate contributions, led us to reconsider. Our reflection on the challenges posed by the Anthropocene reflected a striking common awareness of the need to debate the very nature of scholarly habits, and for that matter, of the role of a university at the dawn of the 21st century. But is there more to Malachi than an offering appeal? Furthermore, what is the purpose of the strong curse at the end of the text that leads many Jewish people to this day to avoid ending the reading of the book with its last verse? In "Blessing and Cursing in Malachi: A Reader-Oriented Approach", the text of Malachi is explored to uncover fresh insights, particularly concerning the themes of blessing and cursing. Three consecutive and complementary steps are taken to explore the book: a syntactic analysis, revealing the organization and flow of the text; a semantic analysis, uncovering themes and their relationships; and a communication analysis, examining the interaction between the Text-Internal Author and the Text-Internal Reader. This disarmingly simple idea has inspired policy experiments in many countries, the Netherlands among them. In an era of Big Data, artificial intelligence, and robotics which shape and sometimes even replace human behavior, however, the classic regulatory paradigm is challenged in fundamental ways. This research program aims to map, understand, and – to the extent possible – help shape the shift from a human-centric regulatory paradigm to a data-centric regulatory paradigm. This project recognizes the importance of human behavior and human decision-making, but challenges the assumption that regulation should continue to primarily be focused on facilitating adequate human decision-making. Rather, the shift towards automated decision-making—with its conflation of norm-setting and norm-enforcement—may require a more fundamental rethinking of the regulatory paradigm. In die banden bevond zich een losbladig naslagwerk waarin over talloze bekende en minder bekende auteurs een toegankelijk geschreven maar met de belangrijkste wetenschappelijke inzichten gevoed overzichtsartikel te vinden was, inclusief biografie en primaire en secundaire bibliografie. In de lemma’s is er aandacht voor bijvoorbeeld thematiek (en de ontwikkeling daarvan), visie op de wereld, kunstopvatting en de relatie tussen leven en werk. Met dit boek markeren we het eindpunt van het Kritisch Literatuur Lexicon. In de zomer van 2021 heeft de nieuwe redactie besloten om het lexicon op een waardige manier te beëindigen. Het feit dat de Digitale Bibliotheek voor de Nederlandse Letteren (dbnl) het archief van het lexicon uit de jaren 1980-2015 digitaal beschikbaar heeft gesteld, speelde een belangrijke rol bij het nemen van die beslissing. We heffen het Kritisch Literatuur Lexicon op, maar maken het tegelijk eindelijk digitaal en open access beschikbaar voor de vakgemeenschap. Met dit boek voegen we daar de stukken aan toe die in de periode 2017-2021 door de nieuwe redactie van het Kritisch Literatuur Lexicon voor publicatie waren voorbereid. The Belgian-Dutch "Stichting Colloquium De Brabantse Stad" organizes an international meeting every three years at which various aspects of the history of the cities and of urban life in the old Duchy of Brabant are examined. In this essay, the authors try to develop a vision in which the word ‘crisis’ is interpreted as ‘opportunity’. First of all, the corona crisis is an opportunity to reflect on our relationship with each other in the many socio-economic connections in which people live, both globally and regionally. There is a concrete case for a change in social and economic thinking based on a reflection on the relationship of the virtues of “mercy” and “justice”. The corona crisis is an opportunity to review our relationship with nature and our association with other living things. Finally, the pandemic is not only seen as punishment of our infringement on nature. The suffering and death resulting from the spread of the virus was, by some individuals, labelled a punishment from God. Zwaarmoedig of dartel, sereen of speels, poëzie leidt onze aandacht terug naar de woorden zelf, de woorden vóór ze hun overstap naar betekenis en werkelijkheid gemaakt hebben, de woorden spelend op, struikelend over hun rand. ‘Op de rand van het woord’ verzamelt zes essays over poëzie, over het spel van woorden op die rand. Zes essays over drie dichters, twee per dichter, dichters die elk op hun manier het label ‘meesterjongleur met woorden’ verdienen: de Duitse dadaïst Hugo Ball, de Vlaamse kubist Paul van Ostaijen en de Nederlandse experimentele poëet Lucebert. Alle drie gooien en houden ze de woorden van hun taal zo in de lucht dat de rand ervan gaat oplichten – zo fel enscherp dat we niet langer zomaar lezen wat er staat. En dit omdat ook wij als lezer op de rand van het woord teruggeworpen worden. It does so in order to find out how they function in the communication between the author and the reader of the text. To analyse the text, I employ the Communication-Oriented Method. This method makes two assumptions. Firstly, it holds that the syntax of the text forms the basic structure in which all communication takes place. This means that the ‘grammar’ of the text is first scrutinised before the meaning of words and the communication itself are investigated. Secondly, this method makes a strict distinction between the text-external (or historical) author/reader, and the text-internal author/reader. The text-internal author/reader are textual constructs and, therefore, found only within the text. In my dissertation I focus only on the communication between the text-internal author and the text-internal reader. In other words, I only analyse the communication within the text, leaving the historical author/reader to other fields of research. Regarding the text-internal communication, the text-internal author can communicate with the text-internal reader directly, or indirectly (via the characters in the narrative). After having first determined the basic structure of the text, I go on to identify the questions that are found in the text. Questions can usually be identified by words such as ‘why’, ‘what’, and ‘how’. Sometimes, the meaning of the text points at questions that are not explicitly mentioned in the text. I then make a communication analysis of the text, focussing on the identified questions. My analysis leads me to the following conclusions. In the communication with the text-internal reader, the text-internal author uses questions to focus this reader’s attention on the character John, to stimulate the reader to identify with the character Mary, to emphasise the relation between the character Jesus and the temple in Jerusalem, and to prepare this reader for further misunderstandings regarding Jesus’ identity in the narrative to come. Generally, the questions found in Luke 1:5–2:52 function at the level of the characters as a communication ‘motor’, with the goal of promoting, prolonging, and intensifying the communication between the characters. However, much is unclear about what kind of polarization is taking place, who is polarizing and why, and what the consequences of polarization are. Guided by theories regarding modernization, the schooled society, social identification, cleavage formation, a cultural backlash, and agonistic pluralism, I aim to clarify the "what", "who", "why", and "whatever" of polarization in Europe. I do so by investigating different forms of polarization between educational groups (Part I), between social identity groups and birth cohorts (Part II), and by disentangling the relationship between polarization and democracy (Part III). Grounded in six empirical chapters based on qualitative and quantitative methods, I conclude that polarization is perceived rather than actually occurring. These false perceptions are driven by a search for social recognition in an ever more individualistic society, resulting in identification with narrow social groups. Educational level is one example of such a social identity, as the schooled society has made knowledge and cognitive skills primary sources of social (mis)recognition. Stereotypical ideas about cognitive and moral superiority are strengthened by politics and social media, distorting the image we have of ourselves and others. This false polarization increases the risk of actual polarization becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy, which will strengthen distinctions between social identities in turn. Although polarization can be good for democracy, the lack of shared identity is affecting the democratic values of younger generations and conflict can erode the system when becoming too moralized. Both European and Latin American authors can read each other’s work(s), allowing knowledge and experience in extended reality to be shared. Another important aspect of XR Academia is its attempt to introduce an open science contribution to the issues of immersive technologies, in order to inspire new generations that do not have access to increasingly expensive publications. This volume includes fourteen selected chapters from presenters from the 2020 and 2021 events. These chapters describe research and experiences on a wide range of XR applications, which include entertainment, health, narration, education, psychotherapy, guidance, language, culture and arts.
